KINDS OF SUB-ORDINATE CONJUNCTIONS

Sub-ordinate conjunctions are classified according to their meaning.
They have nine kinds to express-time, place, manner, comparison, cause, result, purpose, condition or contrast.  Let us read about them.
  1. TIME
Observe the following sentences:-
  1. Many things have happened since we met last.
  2. Leave this place before he reaches.
  3. He gambled till he had lost everything.
  4. Make hay while the sun shines.
Each word in bold type is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses time.  So, it is a sub-ordinate conjunction of time.
  1. PLACE
Observe the following sentences:-
  1. Tell me where you want me to reach.
  2. The lamb went wherever Mary went.
  3. I do not know where to go
Each word in bold type is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses a place.  so, it is a sub-ordinate conjunction of place.
  1. MANNER OR EXTENT
Observe the following sentence:-
  1. It is correct as far as I know.
  2. You shall reap the reward as you sow the seed.
  3. He completed the job according as I wanted.
Each word in bold letters is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses a manner or an extent.  So, it is a sub-ordinate conjunction of manner or extent.

  1. COMPARISON
Observe the following sentences:-
  1. He is stronger than you (are).
  2. He is bold as a lion (is).
  3. The patient looked pale as
Each word in bold letters is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses a cause or reason.  So, it is a sub-ordinate conjunction of comparison.
  1. CAUSE
                     Observe the following sentences:-
  1. He looked sad because he had failed.
  2. I shall do it since you wish it.
  3. I gave the parcel to his wife as he was not at home.
Each word in bold letters is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses a cause or reason.  So it is a sub-ordinate conjunction of cause.

  1. RESULT
Observe the following sentences:-
  1. He is so dull that he cannot follow it.
  2. The ground is so Slippery that it is difficult to walk on it.
  3. This is such a fault that none can pardon it.
Each word in bold letters is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses a result or effect.  So, it is sub-ordinate conjunction of result.
  1. PURPOSE
observe the following sentences:-
  1. He ran fast that he might not be late.
  2. We eat that we may live.
  3. Some people live so that they may eat.
Each word in bold letters is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses a purpose.  So, it is a sub-ordinate conjunction of purpose.
  1. CONDITION
Observe the following sentences:-
  1. Sita will marry ram if he breaks the bow.
  2. I shall not pardon you unless you own your guilt.
  3. He will help you provided you go to him.
Each word in bold letters is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses a condition.  So, it is a sub-ordinate conjunction of condition.
  1. CONTRAST
Observe the following sentences:-
  1. I will trust him though he should deceive me.
  2. You cannot succeed however hard you may work.
  3. I wore only a shirt although it was very cold .
Each word in bold letters is a sub-ordinate conjunction.
But it expresses a contrast. So, it is a sub-ordinate conjunction of contrast.
