A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show its relation to some other word  in the sentence.

Observe the following sentence :-
  1. The pen is in the inkpot.
  2. We depend on you.
  3. The kite is sitting at the tree-top.
  4. The traveller sat under a tree.
  5. The ship is sailing to the shore.
  6. I have send for the doctor.
  7. Monkeys are fond of bananas.
  8. There was a bridge across the river.
  9. Cut the rope with a knife.
  10. The work was completed by him.
Each word in bold type is used before a noun or a pronoun.  It shows the relation of this noun or pronoun with some other word in the sentence :-
  1. The word-in-shows the relation of inkpot with is.
  2. The word-on-shows the relation of you with depend.
  3. The word-at-shows the relation of tree-top with sitting.
  4. The word-under-shows the relation of tree with sat.
  5. The word-to-shows the relation of shore with sailing.
  6. The word-for-shows the relation of doctor with set.
  7. The word-of-shows the relation of bananas with fond.
  8. The word-across-shows the relation of river with bridge.
  9. The word-with-shows the relation of knife with rope.
